What you Need to Know

PCG offers different 'levels' for each age grouping: 2 for Junior, 3 for Senior and 1 Level for Youth aged athletes. All tryout sessions are essentially the same in that the candidates move from station to station around the gym and are shown/taught skills that are performed (or tried) in small groups. These skills include partner stunts (lifts), jumps, tumbling, fitness/strength/flexibility and some basic dance. No one skill area is any more or less important than any other and at no time are the athletes singled out to perform in front of a large group, nor are they 'scored' or 'judged'. Rather, the coaches make general notes on their observations of the athletes' skills as well as their impressions of candidate personality, work ethic, energy, desire and over-all athleticism and showmanship. Virtually every candidate from Mini through Junior is offered a position on one of the teams. Earning a position on one of the Senior teams is proportionately more stringent.

There is a $5.00 Tryout fee for all new candidates (no fee for current Viper members)

The ADVANCED level teams (Junior L-3, Senior L-3 and Sr Coed L-4) have their main tryouts in LATE APRIL, then commence training in JULY. These teams also pick up (some) members via the SEPTEMBER Tryouts as well. The 'Advanced' teams seasons run from July through March (9 months) with their active competition period starting in November. Advanced teams compete in the US and Canada and have travel costs higher than the Intermediate level Viper teams.

Membership on an advanced team requires athletes to display competence in tumbling (both running and standing skills), partner stunting, jumps and performance. Returning team members and athletes wishing to move from Intermediate level teams up to 'Advanced' will have their season long skill set and improvement reviewed as well as their skill set relative to other tryout candidates at their respective levels.

New and Novice cheer athletes are welcome to all teams and all tryout sessions and at any time, an individual is permitted to tryout for the next level up for their age group. We recommend that athletes and parents speak with the upcoming year's respective coaches for tips to improve their tryout potential.

Athletes that are not initially selected to the advanced level teams via the APRIL tryouts (or could not attend), are encouraged to attend the Intermediate team tryouts in MAY such that they can be evaluated. "Missing" the tryout in April does not mean that you won't make the team - it is just easier to do it all at once.

-----------------

The INTERMEDIATE (or Intermediate/Novice) level teams (Youth L-2, Junior L-2 and Senior L-2) have tryout sessions in LATE MAY (primary tryout) and SEPTEMBER (supplementary tryout). These are entry level teams that focus on development of all skill fundamentals and offer a local/Ontario based competition schedule. Their active season runs from September through April (8 months) and operates on a lower cost, lighter travel schedule than the Advanced squads.

NOTE: If an athlete initially attends one of the advanced level tryouts (in April) and is not selected for a squad, he/she will be placed on the appropriate age group (Level) team. This position must be confirmed by REGISTERING and PAYING to join the respective team. We DO NOT hold positions past the registration dates.

The Intermediate level teams are also used as an active recruiting pool for the Advanced squads and are a great place for athletes to develop the skills required to advance up the competitive levels. Movement from Intermediate to Advanced can happen at any time of the year after review and agreement between the athlete, family and coaches.

We often also hold a JANUARY talent identification day to look at new talent for ALL team levels.

-----------------

The RECREATIONAL and MINI level teams commence in Semptember (typically the weekend after Labour Day) and operate on a 2 part 'season'. September to December then restart in January through April. These teams do not hold Tryouts. Athletes interested in joining either the Recreational or Mini teams, are asked to attend the practices first and register shortly thereafter. Specific FIRST PRACTICE Dates will be posted on the PCG Home Page in August,

Please note that ALL teams are ALWAYS open to new potential recruits throughout the year. If you have missed tryouts and want to get involved - please call the office: (519) 434-1037
